The New York State Senate will be reconvening in Albany this Friday September 15th. On that day, it is expected to approve Timothy's Law according to an agreement it has reached with the Assembly and the organizations represented by Timothy's Law Campaign. The agreement is outlined in the August issue of NAMI-NYS News (page 7).
The Senate may also vote to override some of Governor Pataki's vetoes. Among the more than 70 vetoes that the Governor issued were vetoes to the bill to provide an alternative to solitary confinement in Special Housing Units (SHUs) for state prisoners with serious mental illness and to the bill to require a statewide waiting list for community mental health housing. The Senate cannot override these two vetoes at this time because those bills originated in the Assembly, and, by law, the Assembly has to override them first. The Assembly has not yet set a date to reconvene, although we understand it intends to meet sometime later this year.
At this time, we ask our affiliate members to please call their local state senators either at their local district offices before Friday or their state offices on Friday, and tell them to:
"Do the right thing and pass Timothy's Law this Friday."
And:
"I am deeply disappointed that the Governor vetoed bill S.2207-C, to provide an alternative to solitary confinement for state prisoners with serious mental illness, and bill S6353, to require a statewide waiting list for community mental health housing. Please tell the Senator to vote to override these vetoes when he/she has the opportunity to accomplish this."
The number for your Senator's nearest district office is in your local phone book. Your Senator's Albany office may be reached by calling the Senate switchboard at 518-455-2800.
